Bone Marrow Transplant Helps Woman Defeat Recurring Leukemia

After being in remission for five years, Cheryl Smith needed a bone marrow transplant. Physicians at Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center performed the procedure, and Cheryl is now cancer-free.

I was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia on June 4, 2001. After my initial treatment, my cancer went into remission for five years. When the cancer came out of remission, I had a bone marrow transplant.

My team, led by David Porter, MD, was there to support me and lead me through each step of the treatment process. It all came together. After 36 days in the hospital, I was home and I was returning to normal.
